  • Jesus the Messiah rebukes several towns

Jesus rebukes the towns of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum for their failure to repent despite the many miracles performed in them. He compares them unfavourably with the pagan cities of Tyre, Sidon and even Sodom, declaring that those cities would have repented. This passage emphasises responsibility in proportion to the revelation received and the eternal stakes of rejecting the Gospel.

Mark 7.24-31 (King James Version) :
And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs. And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.

  • Healing of a woman on the Sabbath

Pericope 231 recounts Jesus’ healing of a woman who had been crippled for eighteen years, on a Sabbath in a synagogue in Jerusalem (Luke 13.10-17). This act provokes the indignation of the religious authorities, whom Jesus confounds by pointing out their contradictions. The crowd, for its part, marvels and glorifies God. The episode illustrates the tension between Pharisaic tradition and the authentic application of God’s law, while highlighting this woman’s persevering faith.

Luke 14.1-6 (King James Version) :
And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?And they could not answer him again to these things.
